A Week of Purpose and Perspective
The experience was nothing short of life changing. We spent our time in El Javillar, a vibrant, humble, and deeply loving community nestled in Puerto Plata. From the moment we arrived, we were embraced by warmth and kindness that words can’t fully capture. These families, complete strangers at first, opened their hearts to us and, in turn, changed our lives forever. I left with more than memories. I left with lessons in gratitude, unity, joy, and unwavering love. The people of El Javillar exemplified what it means to live in harmony, to share what you have, and to radiate God’s love through your actions and your spirit.
The Mission: Building Homes & Bridging Hearts
Our team, composed of folks from Virginia and Canada, partnered with the incredible Shine the Light Initiative and local contractors to build the homes from the ground up. That’s right, concrete, gravel, sand, beams, walls, flooring, and paint, every detail touched by loving, helping hands. What made it even more special? The neighbors came to help, too. From toddlers to grandparents, people aged 2 to 70+ showed up daily with big smiles and big hearts, ready to build. The energy was unmatched. For those who didn’t speak Spanish, amazing translators were there every step of the way, bridging the language gap so we could all connect.
Sharing Food, Laughter, and Culture
One of the highlights of the trip was spending time cooking and sharing a meal with a local family. We brought groceries, learned to make a traditional Dominican dish, and spent time laughing and dancing in their home. Our hosts were multi-generational, great-grandparents, grandparents, children, and grandchildren all under one roof.
“We played soccer in the street with the kids, danced merengue in the kitchen, and, yes, I learned that chickens have fingernails (and had to cut them off). It was a cultural immersion filled with joy, curiosity, and connection”.
Transformations and Takeaways
This trip taught me so much. About the world, about humanity, and about myself. I felt deep confirmation in my passion for humanitarian work, and I’m seriously considering teaching English in Spanish speaking countries as my next chapter.
I also grew in self-awareness, identifying areas where I want to become better, more present, and more compassionate. One of the most profound gifts was watching my husband and daughter shine with joy, purpose, and laughter. Seeing their hearts in action, giving selflessly, was one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever witnessed.
Until We Meet Again, El Javillar
We’re already counting down the days until we return. El Javillar is more than just a place, it’s family now. If you ever find yourself in Puerto Plata, please visit them. You’ll be met with hugs, laughter, and the kind of love that stays with you forever.
Thank you again to everyone who made this trip possible. God moved in powerful ways this week, and I’m endlessly grateful.
